Rare Experimental US Model 1905/06 Cavalry Saber - Only 157 Made


29.5" curved single edged blade with 16.5" median fuller. Blade .93" wide at ricasso. 36.25" in overall length. 6.5" hilt with sheet steel guard and knuckle bow. Grooved grip with tapered square cross section, covered in shagreen and with 16 wraps of multi-strand wire. Obverse ricasso marked SA/{Flaming Bomb}/1906. Reverse ricasso serial numbered 156. Includes a replacement US M1902 nickel plated steel scabbard with two suspension mounts, a set of detachable leather belt hangers. The scabbard is slightly longer than the blade.

Eleven US M1905 Experimental Sabers were produced for trials in 1905 with an additional M1905/06 Experimental Sabers being produced at Springfield Armory in 1906. The M1905/06 Experimental Saber was produced with three different blade lengths, 27", 30" and 32" and with different two blade tips, standard and clipped. The standard scabbard was leather covered wood made at the Rock Island Arsenal.

Condition
Very good to fine. Blade mostly bright, possibility lightly cleaned as markings are slightly soft. Metal with some freckles of oxidation and discoloration. Guard with an oxidized brown patina and traces of finish. Grip with some wear and a couple of dings in the shagreen that go through to the wood. Wire intact and tight. Leather throat washer intact. Scabbard with some bubbling to the nickel and some flaked loss and showing some scattered oxidation.
